Today marks the ninth anniversary of the day Keith and I had our first date! (It is also my step-mom's birthday today! Shout out to Chris!).
On February 13th, 2003 I went to work, knowing I had this date lined up for about an hour after I got off. I was pretty nervous about the fact that I was going to be meeting someone I had meet through an online dating service. I told a handful of people where I would be going and what time they should expect a call from me that night. You know, in case he turned out to be a serial killer. I remember thinking that it was crazy to have our date be ice cream in the middle of February, but I was new to the area and I felt safe at Baskin Robbins because I "knew" it (Jillian use to work there). I arrived before he did and waited in the little courtyard. It was already darkish, but there was enough light surrounding the Baskin Robbins for me to see him when he walked up (and to feel safe. lol).
He was wearing gloves and so was I. I shook his hand and told him it was nice to meet him and we went in. We spent a few minutes at the counter, deciding what to order.
I ended up with a scoop of "Love Potion #31" and he ordered a banana split. When they asked him what all he'd like on his banana split, he seemed a little put-out as he pointed up the menu board and told them to make it just like the picture... I should have known then...
I was pleasantly surprised when he paid for my cone before I had a chance to. I mean, I know it was only like $2.50, but it was still sweet. (Today, I made him pay with a coupon. LOL!)
Then, we sat down at a little table by the window. I took my coat off, but ended up shivering the ENTIRE time. It WAS February and we were sitting by a drafty window (by the entrance), eating ice cream like lunatics. Plus, I was a little nervous. So, I put my Columbia jacket back on about half way through. When our ice cream was gone, we visited for a bit longer before going our separate ways.
I remember hoping for a second date (it happened four days later) and when I got home there was a segment on Dateline (I think it was Dateline) about online dating and how it was increasing in popularity. Though, at the time, I didn't know anybody who had met this way!
So, today we had a date with our family at Baskin Robbins to celebrate the anniversary. Etta was actually sick and I kept her home from school (poor thing), but she was happy to see her Daddy when we got there and even happier about the soft serve!
Of course, we didn't manage a picture of us TOGETHER today. *sigh* Oh well!
Happy Meet-iversary, hon. Hard to believe it's been NINE whole years!
